WILLY – NARCISSUS

2024

Since 2024, I have been collaborating again with dancer Willy Heramus on new theme “Narcissus 2024”. When he dances in front of a mirror, I capture two real-sized figures on paper. We position the mirror at certain angle to create space between the dancer and his reflection. Technically, this is about perspectives, lighting designs on the drawings to create depth to strengthen the visual context, it explores sensuality and the intimate connection between the two figures. And to keep up with the theme of our previous collaboration in 2017, “The Lines of Lightness” – Willy also dances on the yoga rope on some new drawing designs.

Willy and I have been working together on and off for many years. Our process feels like two kids playing together—experimental and spontaneous—but it’s also deeply serious and incredibly inspiring and… finer lines.

This time, I experimented with a new material: Creta Color compressed charcoal. I use two types of charcoal with different hardness levels, resulting in varied shades in the drawings. This pushes me to experiment with both, allowing to create contrasts—using the deeper black to emphasize details or to distinguish between the two figures. This approach enhances the sense of perspective in the compositions.

Together, Willy and I created 11 drawings – the mirror as our third, silent collaborator.
