Intaglio

Printing and Learning Again.

A couple of months ago, I found out that there is a new printing place in Ubud, Devfto. It was time for me to check it out. There, I met Devi Ferdianto, a fantastic printer, artist, and teacher. So, after 25 years I picked up the printing scales. When I was in art school it was one of the subjects I had to do, but working on such small scale was not for me. But now, after many years working on my iPad, I love small drawings and I have to do something with my digital images. So, I started to make Intaglio (etchings) from my iPad drawings, and a new world of possibilities has opened up for me!

After a few sessions in Ubud (a one-hour drive for me), I started to dream of having my own etching press. First because I don’t like driving that far, and also having my own press makes it possible to try things out in my own studio. Also in my own studio, I can work with live model.

Devi made a new etching press for me! It’s a cute, small press. So now I am working in my studio on etching, and it’s not as easy as I thought. But it is a fantastic medium, in between drawing and painting. My biggest problem is to have clean and crisp edges and borders. I guess I am not as clean as most printers. So, Ketut my assistant helps me do the cleaning stuff. It’s fun to work together on cute, lovely small art works! But there is still a lot to learn. I spend my evenings on YouTube learning about printing, and talking to other printers on-line. Printers love to talk about techniques, something that is rarely found in painters.

After trying different etching techniques, I tried out lithography on aluminum, but I don’t think it’s for me: it’s like drawing with a difficult charcoal, or it is more like watercolor: too controlled. But it’s good to try new things.

Etching has become my new love!

I have prints; etchings and lithographs for sale: limited editions of 5 signed prints (excluding a frame and shipping costs): 300 EUR each. The prints can be sent to you either from the Netherlands or Indonesia. The size of the print is under the picture. The artwork is printed on printing paper, Fabriano 285 gram, acid free.
