Classically-trained Dutch artist, Noella Roos believes in, and is inspired by a thorough understanding of anatomy, composition, materials and arabesque (the line and pattern of the body in movement). In her work, she enjoys the challenge of combining classicism with a contemporary approach and the portrayal of human emotion.

Noella currently lives and works in Bali, Indonesia. Last year she produced beautiful, colourful paintings depicting traditional dancers and their vivid costumes. As a result she has developed a greater appreciation of colour as well as using it more prolifically in her paintings.

This year Noella is focused on large drawings of modern Indonesian dancers, who she draws while they dance in her studio. Her theme this year is the expression of emotion – especially the emotions of pain and anguish. She takes her inspiration for this from the paintings by Michelangelo, Rubens and Rembrandt of the Descent of Christ from the Cross, and from her new dancers, The drawings are being done on paper measuring 140 cm by 160 cm.
